ARTIST STATMENT

Undelivered Letters

“… reading a book without understanding it … meeting someone without knowing him/her…”

In the second month of my stay in Berlin, I continued to examine my identity in this foreign city through language. The new piece is based on a book that I found in a second-hand store. It was once belonged to someone called Alexander Simon and that he had highlighted some sentences in the book. I reinterpreted those German sentences by my own interpretation, in which I could not understand the language and the content. The understanding of the content is not important; it is rather a link of the relationship between the unknown Alexander Simon and me instead.

These images are accomplished with individuals sound that is a response of the unknow language that she encountered.

Fake Tarot of the Day.

Wai Kit Lam, "Fake Tarot", 2012, 22 tarot cards, lambda print, 115 x 80 mm each.In this series of work, I show 22 ‘Fake Tarot’ cards. They are shown in a physical way during the exhibition ‘G.O.L.D - What the #*@& is Value?’ at Voxfire Gallery, and they are also shown one by one & day by day as a game called ‘Fake Tarot of the Day’ on Facebook, from the day of the opening of ‘G.O.L.D’ on 24.2.2012 until 16.3.2012.I would like to question as if we understand the value of a person or an event through merely visual representation. Reading a photograph is very similar to the act of interpreting a tarot card, do we trust the result by only visual elements? Or, indeed we put our subjective mind onto them? Moreover, all the photos in this series are done by iPhone and its apps. I argue if the massive use of smart phone as camera has already become the main trend of taking daily photos, and if this trend has big impact and change on our ways of seeing nowadays. The rapid development of handy photography influences our concept of documentary, it also challenges the value of high art that was once the main concept on photography. On the other hand, the reason of having ‘Fake Tarot of the Day’ on Facebook is to question the trend of posting photograph to the public, of which it is very popular now. How do we perceive this habit of sharing photograph? And how do we define the limit between privacy and publicity? The last but not the least, if nowadays photography has become so popular and easy, does it mean that there is no reason of being an artist with the medium of photography? I don’t think so, not because I see being an artist is supreme or special, instead I would like to make use of the rapid development of photography as a communication tool, of which it is more acceptable and easier to be accessed with the public.Wai Kit Lam, February 2012

《移形換影》林慧潔攝影個展 SLEIGHT: A Photo Exhibition by Wai Kit Lam.

SLEIGHT is the first exhibition Wai Kit Lam holds at Lumenvisum. During Kit’s journey of searching for own artistic style, she has continued to explore photography as a medium to seek for her own identity and the relationship between herself and the environment around her. This time, Kit has pushed this idea further to create a series of diptych photography to project herself into the subject matters. Through the projection, she is able to re-state her own identity and to re-value herself. Additionally, all the images, locations and objects in her photography are taken in Hong Kong. These images add a local flavour to the artwork, as well as present the characteristics of Hong Kong city.

Kit parallels two photos that are shoot in completely different spaces, and separate the two images by placing white borders between them. This represents the distance between space and space, and also between space and various objects. Each photo is not presenting a specific time and location, and not emphasising any particular relationship. The subject matters in the images are not matching with each other, however, under the comparison between the two, it has transformed these images into something different and given them a new explanation.

SLEIGHT emphasises the unusualness between different spaces and objects, at the same time an interaction between them. This special relationship is a metaphor for the fixed feelings of many people that live in our consumer-based society. For Kit, she is not so interested in brands; however, diverse, colourful and fashionable products are always around her on every busy street of Hong Kong. Unconsciously, she develops an odd relationship between herself and the materialistic world. Through this unique comparison, artist showcases spaces around the city to present the crashes that a material world has brought to us in everyday life. These crashes are able to provoke us to re-validate our own self.

Welcome to the opening of an exhibition with LKVs guest artists Wai Kit Lam and Nicola Müller Friday 23rd of November at 7 pm! The exhibition will stand until the 2nd of December.

Wai Kit Lam

Since she arrived in Trondheim this November, Wai Kit Lam became aware of our community’s focus on time – best illustrated in the huge fluorescent boards showing the opening hours at the entrance of every supermarket. Has the inhabitants of Norway’s alertness of time got something to do with the short period of sunlight received during winter? In her attempt to catch the sunlight before it goes down (a none-existing problem in Hong Kong) the notion on how time affects us increases. In the video installation “Passage of time” she dwells on the site-specific experience of time.

The self portraying work of Lam represents both the physical and the mental space that surrounds her. Representation differ from the genuine self and Lam claims that: ”there is no genuine self because it is constructed by ideologies. The so-called genuine self is a construction of what we expect, and will be different under diverse circumstances.”
