Home lesson.

Home: Lesson Two
When the world is talking about how to preserve the historical buildings, I witnessed many old Hu Tungs being torn down. I was told that “demolishing” is not a simple question that can be justified in Beijing. As an outsider, perhaps I do not have the privilege to judge anything, yet I wonder if only the few people living in these houses would be affected in the wave of development.

I decided to walk
into the demolishing villages and experience it directly. Therefore, I ended up in this house.

The posters and decorations were collected from Bei Gao Village, in east Beijing near Fifth Ring Road. The village lived a lot of labours and students who did not have a hukou (resident permit). It was a coincidence or perhaps my fate. I was invited by a middle age lady to document her house with a camera before it got demolished. It was a two-storey building. There was a clothing store downstairs and more than twenty rooms on the first floor rented out to different people. All the tenants had moved out except the family of the house owner and their dog.

All the rooms were nearly empty except the left behind decorations and posters on the walls. From there I saw not only the abandoned decorations, but part of people’s lives in these “home”. Still I do not know any of them who have lived in Mr and Mrs GU’s house, yet a unique linkage has been built between us since I entered their home in May 2010.

P.S. Special thanks to Mrs. GU for her invitation and Mr. GU’s sharing and their passion for life. Wish them all the best in the future and live happily in their new home.
